How was it at the OS Symposium?

OSS Scholar badge here I come!

Hello there! I decided to write a blog about my experience at the open Source Symposium some weeks ago!

A good intro!

Personally, I didn't got much interest in working on Open source projects before. I didn't had much knowledge about what it was exactly and how to contribute. OSS was a nice introduction to the matter.

I liked the presentation and I feel it has a nice focus over which mindset you should have when working with open source projects. It is time spent from people that wish to develop and/or create something new and useful, often a tool. Which should not be confused with a business-related project that has deadlines and a strict structure or good maintenance. In reality, it relies on many factors and a great amount of teamwork.

I must say that when I heard there is not always a person, or a group of collaborators that maintain open source projects out there, it made me realize that a single project could represent a huge amount of teamwork and testing. That each PR should be at its best to avoid bugs and development issues in the future.

You can access the symposium trough this link: -> youtube.com/watch?v=5VvLnUeYzwM

It was interesting to hear the testimonies of everyone, as well than learning how OS impacts in documentation, hardware development, teamwork, and its development.

A few words about open hardware

After hearing about hardware technologies and architectures, I found the concept very interesting. After a little research, i found out about "Open hardware".

This term refers to "a set of design principles and legal practices, not a specific type of object". Open hardware includes good practices as using schematics, blueprints, computer-aided design (CAD) by professionals "under permissive licenses", as said on opensource.com's article.

Personally, I think it's very nice that open source has good communities on both hardware and software sides. For those interested, there is an open hardware association called the "Open source Hardware Association" -> oshwa.org/definition. Also, I invite you to give a reading to opensource.com article on the subject! -> opensource.com/resources/what-open-hardware
